Are We Inadvertently Adding To Our Sex-Driven Culture?

Our culture is becoming increasingly sexualized.

There are few who would deny that statement. As a pastor, I feel like I get a front-row seat to the results of this culture at least weekly, as I interact with people on a personal level, from all walks of life. When the topic comes up, some pitch the idea that teens or young adults are to blame for this cultural shift, but it’s simply not true.

A parent might talk about a teen’s responsibility to avoid sexual temptation, but it was our generation who allowed this ramp-up of sex-crazed culture before our teens became sexually aware. It may not have been through decided social interactions with their children, but parents have made, and continue to make choices every day that influence the culture their kids will grow up in.

  • Every time a device is turned on, a choice related to sexuality is made.
  • Every time a movie is chosen, a choice related to sexuality is made.
  • Every time a concert ticket is purchased, a choice related to sexuality is made.

How do I know this to be true?

I was in sales before I was a pastor. Every dollar that we spend though out our day-to-day lives sends a message to the market and the powers of this world. The economic monster in Western culture will genuinely determine what takes place in the future.

I want to be a successful pastor, but more importantly a successful parent. Each and every day, I need to carefully note that every dollar I spend on even mild sexual content will perpetuate and further create our sex-driven culture.

Thankfully, there are Christian artists, writers and filmmakers that are standing against the tide of sexualization. They’re becoming role models for teens and young adults, by promoting Christ-centred values for life, including sexuality. When the time comes, this will lead our teens toward a flourishing sexual relationship with their spouse.

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

Psalms 119:9-11 (ESV)
