How Faith and Leadership Develop Over Time

A Few Abstract Reflections From My Ministry Journey (Posted Jan. 8th, 2013)

In reflecting on my last three years in ministry, I found myself pondering the significance of age concerning Jesus’ earthly ministry. For context, you can explore my earlier post: “What’s the Significance of Turning 30?

Today, I invite you to dive into a few insights that I’ve gleaned from Hebrews 11—a potentially abstract exploration of faith and leadership. The author opens up with a powerful statement:

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation.

Hebrews 11:1-2 (ESV)

The author then draws on the examples of Old Testament figures, showcasing the commendable faith demonstrated throughout their lives. Taking a glance at the list reveals that many of these exemplary men and women had more than just a few years under their belts.

What’s the connection to yesterday’s post and turning 30?

I acknowledge that logical thinking may not always prevail. Nevertheless, I am certain that God permits our minds to wander to prompt reflection on how we are living our lives. It might not be a direct connection but try to track with me, then leave a question or comment if needs be.

Consider the encouragement centred on faith and leadership in ministry. At 30, in the long run, life is still getting started. There are so many more ministry opportunities and challenges to come. Especially considering our life span in the modern age.

We need to stay humble and hungry.

As we immerse ourselves in the list of faith heroes found in Hebrews 11, consider the story of each character. God reveals that faithfulness is an enduring and commendable character trait, which continues to grow over a lifetime of leadership roles and responsibilities.

Whether you’re entering the early stages of your ministry journey or you find yourself with only a few years remaining, hold fast to faith and view each year as a blessing from God.
