Why Francis Chan’s Book “Erasing Hell” Is Still A Must-Read

Universalism is not Christianity.

When Rob Bell’s book Love Wins hit bookstores, it caused quite a stir! It sparked the beginnings of a rise in universalism throughout Christianity. Although to be clear, universalism has no place within Christianity. If you’re still catching up on Rob Bell’s book, check out this previous post: The Importance of Knowing Our Hero and the Villain

Not long after Bell’s book started to gain traction, Francis Chan released a video on social. It was a promo clip for his new book “Erasing Hell: What God said about eternity, and the things we’ve made up.” As I watched, it was clear that Chan was attempting to recentre Christians who were being pulled toward this false doctrine.

I immediately purchased a copy.

Francis has put out some incredible material in the past, and this book, like others, did not disappoint. It was both Biblical and insightful, bringing a difficult topic into Gospel focus.

I should note that I read both Bell’s book, Love Wins and Chan’s, Erasing Hell. In my opinion, it is still the best book on the topic of hell for anyone seeking theologically sound answers. And regardless of where you stand on the existence of hell, please take a look at Chan’s promo clip below. If intrigued, get a copy of Erasing Hell.

  1. Thanks for this. This conversation really needs to talked about gracefully and processed carefully.

  2. Thanks for your comment Steve. I completely agree. From the sounds of Francis Chan’s new book, I really think that this is the approach he is going to take. Up until this point, many churches and Christian leadership have verbally destroyed Rob Bell for his book Love Wins. To the world, it’s only going to appear like ‘those Christians are fighting with each other again! Like I want to join that crowd?”

I’ll stick with my comment from my Our Hero & The Villain post: “Do I believe he’s mistaken? Yes, I think he is. Do I believe he’s walking the line of false teaching? Yes, I think he is. Am I ready to cut him out of Christendom and wait for him to start some commune in Waco, TX? No, I am not.” I think Rob Bell will read Francis Chan’s new book. Lord willing, Francis might be the graceful rebuke that brings him around.
