The Book Of Judges.
The book of Judges has some incredible highs and some terrible lows.
This week, I finished reading the book of Judges. Throughout my reading this week, there have been times of excitement as I read about great warriors and various accounts of battle.
And yet, I have also felt nauseous as I read some of the accounts of what mankind is capable of, when they turn from God.
The Final Phrase
Today, I have no comments about a particular passage. However, one sentence has appeared several times throughout the book of Judges and has solidified itself in my mind:
“In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.“
Interesting enough that the book actually ends with this phrase!
A couple of weeks ago, I gave a sermon on Romans 13:1-7 (Submission To Authorities). As I read through Judges and the downfall of society when a nation is without a ruler, many of Paul’s words from Romans passed through my mind.
“Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.” (Romans 13:2-4)
No Authority, No Governing Body
What would are society look like with no authority or governing body? What would we try to get away with if we had no police force or military?
Many countries all around the world have seen the vile behavior of human nature when political systems break down.
In recent years, a number of countries in Africa have proven that even children will be used to commit the most heinous acts. When governments are over-thrown, everyone is left to do as they see fit in their own eyes.
Despite my political or social views, after reading through Judges, I am so thankful that we have a stable government.
I’m even more thankful that we have law enforcement, that keeps these random acts of violence and corruption from becoming the norm in our society.
Some day, maybe our ‘ethical’ western society may have its time of moral breakdown? Maybe that day is near?
Thankfully, as Believers we can rest in the fact that even if the entire world becomes as the days of Judges, we will one day live in peace when Christ returns to redeem us!
