Is Retirement Biblical?

In the 90’s, these “Freedom 55 Financial” put out a string of commercials that made big promises for early retirement. (See video below.)

That was 25 years ago!

I was graduating from the fifth grade, so the last thing on my mind was retirement. But maybe some of you were thinking about retirement in the early 90’s?

According to Freedom 55 Financial, if you invested with them in 1991, you should be on a beach somewhere right now (in 2016), enjoying a perfect life.

No? What happened? Life happened!

Clearly, Freedom 55 Financial didn’t read the 4th chapter of James.

James 4:13-17

13 Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” (James 4:13-17)

The Season Of Retirement

As I look through Scripture, I can’t see that saving money in itself, is sinful.

Like many couples, my wife and I started an RRSP early on in our marriage. It helped us get our first home. And Lord willing, it will help us live comfortably in our old age. (So that we don’t have to depend on our 3 boys to take care of us.)

However, depending on the person and the situation, saving for retirement may be a matter of the heart. So the question remains…
