Reviewing Paul’s Purpose; Why He Laboured and Strived for the Gospel

Colossians 1:28-29

When I served as Youth Pastor, I was occasionally given the opportunity to preach in the main service. I remember one particular time that I was given the task of finishing chapter one of a Colossians series we were walking through.

You may remember an earlier post where I mentioned that our church mission statement, based on Colossians 1:28. The mission was, “To Present Everyone Complete.” Click HERE to read the previous post.

I’d like to continue some of those thoughts in today’s post. I’d like to highlight that verse again but this time, move on to the final verse of the chapter to wrap up the thought in context. Then, I’d like to get your feedback if you’re willing!

“For this purpose…”

Colossians 1:28-29 reads as follows:

We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.

It’s clearly stated that verse 28 is Paul’s purpose. According to him, it’s the reason he labours, strives, and works so hard in ministry. He desperately wants every Believer in Christ to be presented complete, in their faith and mission. He wants every Christian to be fully equipped disciples for Jesus.

What do you think?

I was hoping that this post might generate some further thoughts and ideas. Perhaps on how these verses impact you personally? Or how they impact your ministry? Do you have any input on this concluding set of verses from the first chapter of Colossians?

  1. Well, for my future position, I like to take this verse and twist it so it reads, so that we may present every CHILD complete in Christ. Every man begins as a child! For me, personally, the following verse is very personal, because this is for which I will labor, literally! Labor is not an easy thing. Labor is hard. It is tiring. Good word usage, because that is often what ministry is. Hard and tiring, but also rewarding! According to His power because it is only by His will and grace that we do anything. If we do not have God we will not make it very far. I would like to see what the original word in the Bible power was, because that could have significant meaning. Power is such a strong word. To say that God’s power mightily works within me is something I strive for. If we do God’s will we will have God’s power behind us and within us. It is a great motivational passage and should urge all who read it to do more and be more.

    1. Wow Bridget – thanks for putting so much thought into your response! I think it’s a great idea to embrace the mission statement and verse, as it pertains to our children. I can see from your comments that your heart is committed to your new position. I am certain that our children will experience significant spiritual growth under your leadership!
