Discovering the Greatest of All Dark Horses – Small Group Study

What is a Dark Horse?

Last Wednesday night we talked about “Dark Horses” in our Middle School Discipleship program.

Dark Horses

  • What is a Dark Horse?
  • Where did that term come from?
  • Why is being a Dark Horse a good thing?

Dark Horses” by Switchfoot

I made my mistakes, I seen my heart cave in,
I got my scars, I been to hell and back again.
Born for the blue skies, We’ll survive the rain,
Born for the sunrise, We’ll survive the pain.

We’re singing…Hey, you can’t count us out,
We’ve been running up against the crowd.
Yeah, we are the dark horses,
We’re singing…Wait! It’s not over now.

We’ve been down but we’ve never been out,
Yeah, we are the dark horses.
We found the way out,
The city takes everything it can,
But outside the crowds,
I can feel my lungs again.

Keep running with the dark horses,
Hope makes the blood change courses.
Keep running with the dark horses,
Stand up with the dark horses.
Keep running with the dark horses,
Hope makes the blood change courses.

Small Group Discussion

  1. What’s your initial response to this music video and the song lyrics?
  2. In your own words, describe what a dark horse is. Maybe you know of a story or movie where a certain character is a ‘dark horse’? Use that to explain your thoughts.
  3. Why would Switchfoot associate being a Christian with being a dark horse?
  4. Read Romans 8:31-39. This passage gives Christians a huge boost to overcome the challenges of living out our faith. Do you see any ‘dark horse’ themed descriptions in these verses?
  5. Do you believe what Paul wrote to the Roman church? Which part do you struggle with or not fully understand?
  6. Do you think people view Christians or the Christian faith as weak or insignificant? If so, explain.
  7. Do you feel like you’re more than a conqueror? Do you feel like a dark horse? Why or why not?
  8. What step of bravery would you be willing to take this week to become that conquering dark horse? Explain in full.
