WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WE DIE?

What Will Relationships Be Like?

Over the summer and early fall, we’ve worked through each season of life from young to old, and everything in between. We unpacked the Biblical content and real-life stories of God’s work within each of these seasons.

This week, we’ve reached the end; when our seasons of life (in this world) are over. What comes next? Well, for those of us who belong to Jesus, we enter into our final season:

Heaven

Before we unpack what the Bible has to say about heaven, let’s consider our cultural view (in Western society anyway). What do people outside of the church think about heaven?

Cultural Beliefs About Heaven

  • Some think that all good people go to heaven.
  • Some think that their family members that have passed away are looking down on them from heaven or even protecting them in some way.
  • Some believe their family members have become angels.
  • Some people believe that their pets (or animals in general) all go to heaven, so that they can enjoy them again when they die.

Unfortunately, this isn’t just in our culture! As a pastor, I am always shocked at how many Bible-believing Christians subscribe to some of these beliefs.

But why is that?

I believe it comes down to something that we’ve talked a lot about over the past month:

Loss & Loneliness

When people lose someone, they want to believe that they go to heaven. Moreover, they want to believe that their relationship with that person will continue on in some way, and will be the same once they get to heaven after them.

But that’s not exactly how it works.
