WHY I BELIEVE CHURCH MEMBERSHIP IS IMPORTANT

I’m a fan of church membership.

My whole adult life, even before I was in ministry, my wife and I entered into membership at our local church. Though it was never popular with our peer set, we felt compelled to do so. No matter where we’ve moved, we’ve been members of our local church ever since.

This next-generation seems to struggle with the concept. In my experience, and through some quick Googling, a significant part of the younger church attenders, don’t embrace the idea of church membership.

And I definitely understand why.

In their lifetime, the word membership has been closely connected to the retail and marketing world. The word membership seems cheap and there’s always a catch. Why would anyone want that attached to church?

Another key talking point is that the word membership isn’t used in Scripture. Though in defense, the word “member” definitely is, connected to being a part of the body of Christ.

To positively impact a community, I believe that the local church needs members from every age and demographic within their membership. When heavy discussions ensue and big decisions are made, we need Millennials and even Gen. Z at the table as much as Gen-Xers and Boomers.

The future of the Church

We need the next generation’s input, yet entering into membership seems to be a roadblock for many of them. I think education and conversation are key. Perhaps on both sides?

We need to see the value in bringing younger generations to the discussion table of local church life and growth. Then we’ll see younger generations being brought into membership. It can be organized in town-hall meetings or think-tank discussions, but we can’t keep holding their voice hostage until they sign the membership documents.

It’s time to invite them in.

If you’re in senior leadership at your local church, organize a young adult or student ministry small group, in order to hash out this thing called “membership”. It will show great character and care for the next generation.

There’s a huge impact when a pastor, elder, or board member gives of their time, to share with younger generations. Too many times, it’s considered the youth pastor’s job.  And perhaps it is? But what a different message is sent when a senior leader spends specific time with the future church.

So what about you?

I can’t express how great a blessing it is to enter into membership with a local church. Maybe you would reply with, “I attend, so I’m a part of the church anyway.” Or perhaps, “I’m a member of the universal church.”

Those are both true statements. Nevertheless, I can personally attest to the impact of specifically choosing to attach, connect, join oneself as a part of a local body. I can do far more for the church as an organism (not just an organization), within the realm of membership. And I receive huge blessings and rewards!
