We Look To the Old!

The Old Testament book of 2 Kings is full of accounts where leaders succeed, then in turn fail.

As these men lived out their lives, it’s almost frustrating to see them make the same mistakes time after time. One leader has a moral failure which causes the people of Israel heartache, then a couple of generations down the line, the same mistake takes place again.

There seems to be this constant mix of good leaders and bad leaders and we’re left wondering, “how does God put up with these people?“

Fortunately, we find the answer in a couple of verses, found in 2 Kings 14:

“The LORD had seen how bitterly everyone in Israel, whether slave or free, was suffering; there was no one to help them. And since the LORD had not said he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, he saved them…” (2 Kings 14:26-27a)

You see, its at this point where we remember once again; God’s love for His people and promise of their salvation surpasses all the dumb decisions leadership makes! God has issued a covenant with Israel from the beginning and He will keep His word.

So what does that mean for us today? Well, as members of the new covenant, we also receive the same grace in times of failure. In the church today, we have the same mixed bag of leadership.

Furthermore, as a leader looking at his own heart, I must admit that I’m just a mixed bag of leadership as well.

Let’s be honest for a moment leaders.

Depending on the situation, the stress, the lack of time and resources (or the wealth of time and resources for that matter); we have all had those times where our flesh overtakes our better judgment. Soon after, we fail then we fall.

Leaders, we have so many people depending on us! How great is it that we have this new covenant that surpasses blood-lines and family history?

As Believers in Christ, we are welcomed into the eternal plan of the Church. As we lead, though it may not always seem like forward motion, God promises that we are. Because of His covenant with us, our failures as leaders will be redeemed, becoming His success.
