This week, I’ll attempt to unpack a very difficult passage in the New Testament, 1 Timothy 2:11-15:

11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing – if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

This passage is especially difficult within Western culture, where genders and gender roles are becoming null and void. Moreover, it’s no surprise that passages like this one, that deal with a woman’s role in the church have been used to cause massive divisions.

3 Major Positions

When discussing a woman’s position in the church, there the 3 major positions concerning women in ministry, found in Western churches:

  • Beginning on the far left, we have the Egalitarian View, where there is no distinction between men and women in ministry.
  • On the far right, we have the Hierarchical View, where women are never permitted to teach, lead or be in any sort of full-time ministry.
  • Lastly, in the middle, we have the Complementarian View, where men and women have different but complementary roles and responsibilities in ministry.

Personally, I believe the Bible aligns with the middle Complementarian View.

But Why?

Why do I believe this middle view is the Biblical one? What in this passage leads us to this understanding? Well, as Paul points out in verses 13 and 14, we’ve got to go all the way back to Genesis.

And this week, I’ll be unpacking the answers found in Genesis (and other texts) to get the bottom of this difficult debate. Click the green “Subscribe Now” button below, to receive these upcoming posts, straight to your inbox.
