WRAPPING OUR MINDS AROUND THE CONCEPT OF FALLING AWAY

This is a tough one!

The idea of falling away from God’s grace has plagued the mind of many a theologian.

In Hebrews 6, Scripture seems to indicate that it’s a reality that one may face. And yet, it’s hard to exactly place it, because it’s wrapped in the mystery of salvation, God’s eternal plan and the after-life.

Personally, I have wondered about people who I knew as a teen in youth group. They seemed to truly desire a relationship with God and took part in all aspects of church-life. Then, as they reached adulthood, it didn’t seem to hold.

Do these people fit into the concept of falling away? Was it just the community that we had that held them in place? Did they ever really know Jesus to begin with? Did they ever have the Holy Spirit?

I know it’s not my place to determine this.

Some of you are already saying in your minds, “It’s not our place to judge.” A Christian cliché that helps us ward off difficult topics.

I’m still left trying to wrap my mind around why some people remain in the faith and some do not. I don’t know how to just shrug it off.

As I’ve tried to search and struggle to find an answer, I’ve written a bit more on the topic, mixed with thoughts regarding the sovereignty of God, and how they play into the whole debate.
