3 Lessons on Perseverance from Cycling
We were living in Northwest Calgary at the time.
I had started getting out on my bike as spring finally arrived. Nose Hill Park was just down the road, a beautiful stretch of rolling hills and winding trails. Some of the climbs were steep enough that I had to hop off and push, but the ride down was always a rush.
One afternoon, while catching my breath at the top of a hill, I realized how much cycling mirrors leadership and faith. When we face trials, tough situations, or problems that require endurance, it’s just like a cyclist grinding up a steep incline. It all comes down to perseverance.
As Christians, we hold to Paul’s teaching to the early church. Keeping the context above in mind, consider his words to the Roman Christians:
“We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.” – Romans 5:3–4
When Circumstances Feel Overwhelming
When we first face difficult circumstances, it can feel ominous, much like staring at a long uphill climb. That’s when we need to change gears.
God gives us wisdom through prayer and His Word, showing us smaller steps so we can keep moving forward.
When Rest Becomes Necessary
Sometimes the hill is simply too steep. Just like a cyclist who must stop and refuel with food and water, we need to rest and nourish ourselves in God’s Word.
Perseverance is not about rushing ahead but about learning when to pause, recover, and then try again.
When Focus Is the Only Way Forward
Cyclists push through by focusing on the finish line. In the same way, our perseverance comes through fixing our eyes on Christ.
Paul wrote in Philippians 3:14: “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
That is our ultimate focus.
So whatever trail you’re facing today, may God give you wisdom to break the problem into smaller steps: strength to rest in His Word, and faith to focus on Him as the goal of your perseverance.
