it packs a punch! Within this small letter, there’s a wealth of doctrinal content. It’s often overlooked within the New Testament letter because it has some taglines reaching back into Jewish history, and non-biblical texts. This can leave some scratching their heads and even sermons are hard to come by.
The teens before us (in the 80s) had broken through a lot of the legalism regarding playing cards, pool halls, going to movies and best of all, listening to rock music! By the 90s, Christian rock options were coming out of every major city faster than we could memorize lyrics. Christian artists were coming out of the woodwork, creating sounds that drove teen culture; yet carried positive or at least neutral messages with every note.
For anyone who works with students, we make it our job to visit schools, strip malls and skate parks; trying to connect with unchurched youth. The passion is pure, with a deep desire for those students to know and follow Jesus. Yet, the youth church (not the youth group) we create couldn’t be more uncomfortable for these students.
Our goal tonight is to challenge the concept that our labels are found on the outside. It doesn’t matter what label is on the outside. It’s what’s on the inside that really matters!
