Accepting Criticism Sharpens Character
When Criticism Hurts Most
Criticism sharpens character even when it cuts deep. It’s one thing to hear critique about our plans or work. But when someone questions our motives or character, everything changes. It feels personal and painful, especially in digital spaces where words are harsher.
As believers, we should expect it. Jesus warned His followers it would happen.
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” John 15:18-19
Change Your Perspective
We shouldn’t give up or withdraw. Being challenged shapes us for the next conversation, dispute, or attack. It prepares us to answer with grace and truth. It also humbles us, showing us we still have room to grow.
Instead of shutting down or lashing out, we can choose to see critique as an opportunity to listen and learn.
Criticism can push us closer to God. When the words sting, we can pause and pray. We can ask God to help us see what’s true, let go of what isn’t, and respond with patience and love. This way, even tough conversations become moments of growth and witness.
When we take criticism with humility, we reflect Jesus more clearly. We show that following Him is not about always being right but about being transformed and willing to change.
Facing True Criticism
But what if the criticism is accurate? Criticism sharpens character best when we are humble enough to see the truth in it. It hurts to have our flaws exposed. Even unfair or harsh criticism can hold a kernel of truth we need to address.
Scripture teaches us to view these moments differently.
“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
We may need to accept the rebuke and let God use it to refine us. This kind of self-examination is hard but essential for growth as disciples.
Applying the Sharpening Stone
Today, ask yourself these questions:
- Where am I being challenged?
- Where is my character being tested at work or in ministry?
Then ask God to show you the reasons behind your reactions.
- Why does a comment hurt so badly?
- What lesson is there for me in that discomfort?
