Benefits of Serving in Camp Ministry

Spring always brings me back to memories of camp ministry.

Years ago, I served as director of Whispering Pines Bible Camp in the Alberta foothills. Though I’m no longer in camp ministry today, I often look back on those days with gratitude for how God shaped my life, my family, and my leadership.

It was never about the paycheck. Serving in camp ministry was about seeing lives changed by Jesus Christ, and that made it worth every sacrifice. But looking back, I also realize the added benefits God gave along the way.

Time in God’s Creation

Camp ministry gave me the chance to spend countless hours in God’s creation. The camp was surrounded by rugged beauty, and even the journey there required rough roads and snowmobiles at times.

Scripture reminds us, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork” (Psalm 19:1).

Whether it was a quiet walk in the woods, watching a sunset over the hills, or working outdoors with campers and staff, I felt God’s glory woven into creation itself.

Time for Outdoor Adventure

Serving in camp ministry wasn’t just about the office or the pulpit. It was about hands-on activity: canoeing, hiking, snowmobiling, and more.

These moments weren’t just recreation; they were opportunities for discipleship. Teaching young people to push through challenges outdoors often opened doors to conversations about trusting God through life’s challenges.

Time with Family

Perhaps one of the greatest blessings of camp ministry was the time it allowed me to spend with my family. Even though ministry can be demanding, camp life had a way of blending work and family together. Looking back, I see how precious that was.

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Psalm 127:3).

I’ll never forget the days when I was able to serve alongside my son, Jude. In fact, he gave his life to Christ in a cabin during an early-open, when he and I were the only ones on the property. That memory will always stay with me.

Lasting Lessons

Though my ministry context has changed, the lessons remain. Serving in camp ministry taught me to value creation, adventure, and family. These weren’t just side benefits. They became God-given gifts that shaped my walk with Christ.
