Influence Over Power: How to Create Lasting Impact

Having a Lasting Impact Through Service

Is it better to seek influence or power? It’s tempting to think power is the ultimate goal. Businesses gain financial strength through products and services. Governments hold a political grip through promises and policies. But here’s the truth: Power rarely creates lasting impact. Choosing influence is the real key.

A Lesson from Jesus on Influence

In John 13, Jesus shows us how to gain lasting influence.

“Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” (John 13:3-5, ESV)

Even though Jesus had all yet He chose influence through this act of service. He didn’t command His disciples to serve Him, which He could have rightfully done as their Rabbi. Instead, He served them. This act demonstrated that true influence is gained through humility and love, not control.

Power Takes, Influence Gives

Power is often seized by force, but influence is given through shared experience. Jesus didn’t just talk about love. He showed it. His influence stretched far beyond His earthly ministry because He chose to serve.

Living with Influence Over Power

Reflect on your relationships and the people you interact with. Think about your words and actions at work, at church, in your family, and among your friends. Have you intentionally or unintentionally been seeking power over others? Or have you chosen to influence them through service? What changes should you be making?

Take some time after reading this post to pray. Ask God to help you become a person of influence. Consider how you can shift to creating a lasting impact. Make a plan to engage in humble service this week.
