Pray for People Who Shaped Your Past

When Memories Lead to Prayer

How do you use your downtime? Whenever I get a moment to pause, my mind tends to wander back through the years. And more often than not, those reflections include people. I think about the relationships that shaped me, challenged me, or those people who simply walked alongside me in a specific season. Lately, I’ve realized how often those moments are an opportunity to pray for people from my past.

Prayer helps those faces come to mind. I wonder where they are today and what new paths they’re walking. But here’s the real question I’ve been challenged with lately: When I think of them, do I pray for them?

Consider the Apostle Paul’s Example

In his letter to the Philippian church, Paul shows us how this concept works:

“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:3–6

He remembered the people in his life with joy. And then he prayed for them! That’s something I want to grow in. Not just thinking back fondly, but learning to pray for people as God brings them to mind.

Let Your Reflections Lead to Prayer

I encourage you to read through Philippians 1 today. Let it shape the way you think about those in your past. As each name or face comes to mind, pause and pray.

Thank God for them. Ask Him to bless them. Trust that He’s still working in their lives. This is a practical way we can pray for people, even those we haven’t seen in years.

Take It One Step Further

Be open to God nudging you toward more than just prayer. Maybe it’s sending a note, a text, or setting up a meeting. Sometimes when we pray for people, God moves us to reconnect with them.

And who knows? Maybe your prayer today is the beginning of a new chapter in that relationship. Maybe today’s prayer will lead to tomorrow’s memory.
