Salmon Strengthen My Faith in Doubt
Salmon Are Remarkable
I’ve always had a deep appreciation for God’s creation, especially when it comes to marine life. One of the most remarkable creatures He made is the salmon. They’re not just delicious when baked with lemon and dill, but they also point us back to God’s design in powerful ways.
The largest species, the King Salmon (or Chinook), is a powerhouse. When hooked, it dives, leaps, and thrashes with strength that feels almost unmatched. Yet what amazes me even more than their power or taste is the incredible cycle God placed in them.
The Miracle of Return
After years in the ocean, salmon return to the very place where life began. Without maps or memory, they fight their way back upstream to spawn. Sometimes they even hurl themselves through and up pounding waterfalls, refusing to give up until they reach home.
Every time I think about that, I’m reminded of God’s handiwork in creation.
Paul wrote that God’s “invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived… in the things that have been made” (Romans 1:20).
The life of a salmon testifies to a Creator whose wisdom far exceeds chance or theory.
Hope in Times of Doubt
When I wrestle with doubts, salmon remind me that God has designed systems of life so complex and beautiful that they can only come from Him. If He cares to direct the return of salmon, how much more does He guide the return of His people to Himself?
Even in my weakest moments, I find encouragement in the psalmist’s words:
“The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1).
Creation itself becomes a weapon against doubt, reminding me that God is real, powerful, and good.
