Exploring Labels and Our Identity In Christ – Small Group Study
Our goal tonight is to challenge the concept that our labels are found on the outside. It doesn’t matter what label is on the outside. It’s what’s on the inside that really matters!

Over the past couple of weeks in our Surrender series, we’ve looked at what it would mean to “Surrender Stuff”. Specifically, we’ve explored the tough truth that many of us are “Possessed” by our possessions. This week, Francis Chan is going to move us into the theme of “Surrender Status”.
Through the ’90s, I never would have expected to go to a Christian music festival and see poets mixed in with my favourite hard rock bands. Flash-forward to today, and it’s a trend that is growing in popularity. The dramatic spoken word seems to be making a huge comeback within alternative Christian circles and it is fascinating to watch.
In our lives, work or school, family life or social settings feel overwhelming. Sometimes it’s the layering of all those things that become too much. Add to all of that our goals and aspirations that we feel called to reach, but then they might fall apart as well. In these moments, life feels impossible!
Just about everyone has some general dreams and aspirations. For some people, it might be as simple as learning the family business or as lofty as becoming the President of the United States. For others, their dreams include riches or popularity. Still, others have no desire for either of those things but instead, dream of serving God or fellow man in some capacity.
A while back I decided to occasionally update my website with lesson plans from our small group sessions. This past week, we spent some time talking about God’s ultimate plan and purpose for our lives.
I was so excited! It was late October during my days as a youth pastor. All in one weekend, we had a Leadership Retreat, a Fund-Raiser Lunch and our annual Youth Harvest Party. Which also included a trip to the local Hay-Maze!
Youth Pastors should spend time with students. Over time, more and more students show up for youth-related events and activities. It can be difficult for a Youth Pastor to get the face-time needed to develop authentic relationships with all the students.
We received a call wondering if we were interested in hearing from a couple of missionaries from Mexico, with Northern Lights Ministries. They were visiting Alaska and were willing to speak to our students about their mission work.
During my youth pastor days, we worked through John Eldredge’s EPIC series within our High School Discipleship program. John explains Christianity as a great story that we are living. He proposes that history’s great stories became great because they have the key elements of our story.
When I was a youth pastor, I led a group of students from conservative, semi-rural Alaska on a missions trip to Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC. The first part in Seatlle was fairly familiar for them, but Vancouver was a different story. Considering their home environment, our students received the full brunt of religious, ethnic, and socioeconomic culture shock!
Bob is a true evangelist! I had an opportunity to hear him speak at Creationfest years ago, and his message still resonates with me. During his presentation, he suggested that the church should be doing a better job of evangelizing to youth and children. I don’t think anyone in the crowd disagreed. However, we were all further compelled when he laid out the reasons why.
