The Eternal Significance of Showing Love

When love costs more than comfort

How great the love of the Father! In 1 John 3, we find incredible wisdom on what it means to truly love one another. John starts with this powerful reminder:

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” (1 John 3:1a)

Everything begins there. God’s love is the starting point and the reason we can love others at all. Before we ever do anything, we’re called to receive the love of a Father who calls us His own.

Love That Costs Something

Later, John warns that showing Christ-like love won’t always be easy or popular:

“Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.” (1 John 3:13–14)

Loving others (especially those who don’t know Christ) doesn’t guarantee applause. Sometimes, it leads to rejection. Yet we’re still called to love. Always. Even when it’s ignored, misunderstood, or despised.

If we’re honest, that kind of love stretches us. It costs something: comfort, pride, maybe even safety. But that’s exactly the kind of love Jesus displayed.

The Pattern of Sacrificial Love

Here’s the verse that hit me hardest today:

“By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?” (1 John 3:16–17)

That question lingers: How does God’s love abide in me if I see a need and do nothing?

How much am I willing to sacrifice to show love to a friend, a stranger, even someone who hates me? The highest expression of love was Jesus laying down His life. That’s the example. That’s the calling.

Crazy Love That Changes Everything

This passage reminds me of Francis Chan’s book Crazy Love. Chan describes sacrificial love as the greatest love humanity can comprehend. It’s a love that gives everything because it’s rooted in eternity.

He challenges us to let that eternal love fill our minds daily. While driving. Shopping. Working. Thinking about the love of Christ in ordinary moments changes how we live and love. It moves love from a feeling to a lifestyle.

That’s the eternal significance of showing love. It reflects the heart of Jesus and points others to Him.
