The Secret to Finding God’s Will

What is God’s will for my life?

This question has echoed in the hearts of countless believers. We’ve all been there: praying, hoping, yearning for some little white dove to drop a message straight from heaven. A direct answer from God. But it doesn’t usually happen like that, does it?

When I Wanted a Direct Answer

This question often weighs especially heavily on young adults. I remember those days. The stress and excitement are all mixed into one anxious emotion. I desperately wanted a direct answer about God’s will for my life.

My intentions were good: I wanted to follow God’s leading, to do what was right, to make a difference. I spent hours praying and reading Scripture, but mostly I was trying to convince God, not ask Him. Then, a mentor shared something that changed my perspective.

Jesus’ Greatest Commandments

In Matthew 22, Jesus said:

“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets’” (Matthew 22:37–40, ESV).

My mentor explained: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Love your neighbor as yourself. Then do whatever you want to do.”

At first, that threw me for a loop. But he was pointing to a deeper issue in my heart.

The Problem Beneath the Question

I wanted clarity about my future, but I wasn’t asking from a place of closeness with God. I had kept Him at a distance. And that’s often the case for us. We’re too busy with everything else, and when we suddenly need answers, we panic.

We throw up desperate prayers, hoping for direction. But we haven’t been investing in our relationship with Christ. We haven’t been loving and serving others. The focus has been on us, not on Him.

God’s Will Flows from God Himself

Our Father loves us, but like any good parent, He doesn’t just hand over everything we ask for on demand. He wants what’s best for us, which takes trust and patience.

The secret to finding God’s will isn’t about waiting for a dove to deliver a message. It’s about focusing on Him.

  1. Set aside time to retreat with God. (Make an appointment to meet with God.)
  2. Step into creation. (Find a quiet place in nature.)
  3. Pour over Scripture (Not searching for a quick answer, but simply to enjoy His presence.)
  4. Pray without an agenda. (Ask, “Lord, what would You like to talk about?”)

That’s where His will begins to unfold.
