Unlocking a Pattern of Sin
Recognizing the Cycle
Unlocking a pattern of sin starts by recognizing that sin can slowly trap us in cycles we never intended to fall into.
At first, we feel the sting of shame and remorse. In that moment, we could turn back. But often, we minimize what we’ve done, usually by comparing ourselves to others. We tell ourselves, “At least I’m not as bad as them.”
The Cycle Deepens
The more we justify it, the easier it becomes. What started as a one-time mistake turns into a habit. That habit makes God seem distant, and eventually, His forgiveness starts to feel out of reach.
But it’s not.
In Luke 7, we read about a woman whose sins were many. We’re not told the exact nature of her lifestyle. When she heard Jesus was at a Pharisee’s house, she showed up with a jar of perfume. She stood behind Him weeping, and washed His feet with her tears.
“A woman of the city, who was a sinner… brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears… and anointed them.” — Luke 7:37–38 (ESV)
A Lesson in Forgiveness
The homeowner was shocked that Jesus would let such a woman touch Him. But Jesus turned the moment into a lesson about forgiveness.
“‘A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty… he forgave the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?’ Simon answered, ‘The one, I suppose, for whom he canceled the larger debt.’ And he said to him, ‘You have judged rightly.’” — Luke 7:41–43 (ESV)
The woman knew the weight of her sin. She wasn’t pretending or comparing. She just wept at Jesus’ feet, desperate for forgiveness. And He gave it.
“Then he said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’” — Luke 7:48 (ESV)
It’s Never Too Late to Turn Back
No matter how long sin has held you in its grip, the best time to turn back to Jesus is now.
Jesus isn’t surprised by your sin. He’s ready to forgive it. He’s ready to welcome you back. He’ll speak the same words into your life: “Your sins are forgiven.”
