Unwrapping Gifts of Hope

As Christmas draws near, our homes start to change.

Lights glow. Trees stand tall. Decorations fill the branches. But it never feels complete until the gifts appear underneath. Each wrapped box builds anticipation; a countdown to the moment we celebrate together. And even though the Christmas tree isn’t part of the original story, it still points us toward something deeper. It reminds me of how God filled Scripture with promises, strategically placed like gifts under a tree; each one revealing His prophetic gifts of hope found in His Son.

The Promise of Anticipation

Before Jesus was born, God gave His people over 300 prophecies throughout the Old Testament. Each one whispered hope, preparing Israel for the Messiah to come. Isaiah’s prophecies stand out. His words lit the darkness with promises of rescue and restoration. As we unwrap those prophetic gifts, we begin to see how they still shape our hope today.

Immanuel: God With Us

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)

This prophecy pointed to the miraculous birth of Jesus; God stepping into our world. What began as a promise to Israel became hope for us all. Even now, Immanuel means we’re never alone.

The Wonderful Counselor and Prince of Peace

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given… and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6–7)

Isaiah saw a leader unlike any other: wise, strong, eternal, and peace-giving. In a world filled with noise and conflict, Jesus still fulfills this promise. He brings clarity when we’re confused and peace when life feels chaotic.

A Shoot from the Stump of Jesse

“There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.” (Isaiah 11:1–2)

Even when Israel’s hope seemed cut down, new life would grow from David’s line. Jesus came as that righteous Branch, ruling with justice and grace. His reign reminds us that God always keeps His promises.

Preparing Our Hearts This Christmas

As we approach Christmas, here are a few ways to let these prophetic gifts shape your season.

  1. Reflect: Read through Isaiah 7–11 and look for the promises hidden like treasures.
  2. Record: Write down the ways those prophecies have been fulfilled in Jesus.
  3. Revisit: Return to your notes as Christmas nears, letting Scripture renew your hope in Christ.

These prophetic gifts are living reminders that God’s plan for redemption has always been personal. As we celebrate Jesus’ birth, may our anticipation deepen. Let’s not just remember a story from the past but rejoice in the Saviour who still brings light into our darkness.

There’s no greater gift than Jesus.
