Why Change Matters for Growth
Embracing Seasons of Change
Let’s talk about seasons of change. For most of us, life feels good when everything runs on schedule. We enjoy small wins like waking up before the alarm or finishing a project early. But then there are the moments when life shifts. We face the challenges of change, whether planned or unexpected.
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1 ESV)
Finding Purpose in Transition
Seasons of change can be unsettling, but they’re essential for growth. Following that verse in Ecclesiastes 3, the assumed author, Solomon, lists life’s many seasons:
“a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.” (Ecclesiastes 3:2-8 ESV)
Staying Focused Through Seasons of Change
We shouldn’t be anxious about these transitions. As the Apostle Paul writes:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6 ESV)
As Christians, we’re called to see change as an opportunity to grow. This mindset sets us apart: the ability to stay focused and motivated when everything shifts.
Of course, seasons like weeping and mourning will test the strongest of the faithful. That’s expected. But even in the hardest changes and challenges, God shapes us. We will overcome, and we will grow, even through the gravest seasons of change.
Reflect on Ecclesiastes 3
I encourage you to read Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. Prayerfully focus on each season it describes. See how God is at work in your own transitions. Let these words remind you that every season has purpose, even when it’s hard to see.
“a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance” (Ecclesiastes 3:4 ESV)
