Why You Should Watch Son of God

Theatre Moments and First Impressions (March 2014)

Last night, my wife and I went to see the Son of God movie. Needless to say, it was excellent.

As we walked into the theatre, I asked the man ripping tickets if it was in 3D. He smiled and said, “No, He’s amazing enough all by Himself!”

What a perfect comment. My wife and I both smiled and agreed. That one sentence put us in the right frame of mind before the opening scene even began. Jesus really is amazing enough all by Himself.

Comparing Son of God and Passion of the Christ

Naturally, comparisons have been made between this film and The Passion of the Christ. It’s the most significant Jesus film since then. I admit, I couldn’t help but mirror the two as I watched.

But honestly, they felt different. Son of God gave more attention to Jesus’ life—how He lived, how He related to people, and how He fulfilled Old Testament prophecy. It showed His miracles and ministry more clearly than other films I’ve seen.

A Sobering Crucifixion Scene

The crucifixion was appropriately sobering. As Jesus was being tried, mocked, and beaten, you could hear people quietly weeping in the theatre. Watching it unfold on the big screen stirred something deep in me. I felt humility, repentance, and a renewed awareness of what Jesus endured for us.

As Isaiah wrote:

“But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” – Isaiah 53:5

A Powerful Resurrection Moment

I especially appreciated how the resurrection was portrayed. I’d go as far as saying it was stronger than Passion of the Christ in that regard. I also loved how the character of Thomas was developed throughout the film. His interaction with the risen Christ was one of my favourite moments.

Jesus’ words to Thomas in John 20 are so personal:

“Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” – John 20:29

A Fresh Eternal Perspective

When the credits rolled, I sat there quietly, reflecting on my own life. The Son of God movie helped put my recent thoughts and actions into a more eternal perspective. I walked out with a deeper appreciation for who Jesus is and what He’s done.

If you haven’t seen Son of God yet, I’d encourage you to make time. You’ll walk away changed.

Just remember, the screen doesn’t make Jesus more powerful or more real. Like the man at the theatre said, “He’s amazing enough all by Himself.”
