WHY GETTING OUTSIDE IS THE BEST PLAN FOR CHRISTMAS FAMILY FUN

It’s Christmas Eve!

Most of us are spending quality time with family; but what’s the plan? What are you going to do today to make some memories? What will make today different than every other day of the year? What will create the best Instagram shot or status update? I believe there is a simple answer.

Why not get outside?

That’s right. It’s time to go outside. No matter where you live or what the climate; there is something out there worth experiencing. I know there’s Christmas dinner to prepare and gifts to wrap. For some of us, an hour might be all we can spare. Nevertheless, it’ll be worth it!

Let’s face it; we’ve spent one too many days entrenched in industry, technology, meetings, and deadlines this year.

Perhaps we’ve forgotten the last time we saw something natural, other than the snow in our driveway or the poinsettia on the corner of our desk. Perhaps our relationships with God and the people around us, are starting to feel as mechanical as the everyday comforts that we can’t seem to live without.

It’s Christmas! It’s time to retreat from all that!

Regardless of who we are or where we’re from, there is great value in connecting with God’s creation when we have the time to do so. It may be found in a quiet winter stroll, personally reconnecting with the Lord and thanking Him for this past year’s blessings.

It might be found in a group outing with family or friends, to enjoy the Creator’s handiwork together. Build a snowman, go sledding, have a snow ball fight, make some snow angels!

Our family traveled to a warmer climate this year, but the forecast calls for rain for the next few days. Nevertheless, we’ll get outside with the boys and splash in some puddles to make the best of it! I understand that this whole thing may not seem logical. Whether snow or rain, the fireplace may seem like a way better plan.

The fireplace will still be there when we get back.

And it’ll actually feel that much better! Take a chance and put a few more building blocks on those relationships. Make some new memories within the wonder of God’s natural world.

Whatever personal or family retreat plan we decide on today, it will be incredibly beneficial. The daily tasks and responsibilities of this past year will seem trivial. Our awareness of God’s sovereignty will be heightened and our appreciation for every breath of life will bring about thanksgiving.

All of this, through purposefully making some creation-based memories this Christmas.
