Building Momentum Through Commitment

We’ve all heard these sayings:

“Practice what you preach.” “Talk the talk, walk the walk.” But let’s be honest; sometimes it’s hard to get our actions to match our intentions. Commitment is more than nodding along or making vague promises. It’s a choice that requires courage, follow-through, and trust in Jesus.

Every step of commitment builds momentum in our faith. Small choices become habits, habits become practices, and practices reshape our lives. That’s how fear shrinks and faith grows.

Commitment Starts with a Step

Commitment usually means stepping into the unknown. We don’t always see the outcome, but we trust God to guide us. Starting is itself a spiritual decision. It’s saying yes to His call, leaning on Jesus, and believing He’ll handle the results.

Take the first step, and you’ll find it becomes a stepping stone for the next one. That’s how commitments build momentum.

Peter’s Courageous Commitment

Think about Peter in Matthew 14:23–33. He stepped out of the boat, walking on water toward Jesus. Sure, he faltered when the wind distracted him, but his first step showed remarkable courage and faith.

That’s the pattern. Commitments don’t require perfection; they require focus. We keep our eyes fixed on Christ as we move forward.

Peter’s Restorative Commitment

Later, in John 21:3–13, Peter jumped into the water again. This time, after failing Jesus by denying Him three times, Peter ran straight toward Him in hope of restoration.

Jesus met him with forgiveness and recommissioned him as a leader in the early church. Peter’s story reminds us that failure doesn’t cancel our future. In Christ, there’s always restoration.

Don’t Let Fear or Shame Hold You Back

Fear and guilt keep us stuck. But Jesus calls us to step up, step out, and follow Him. When we commit to Jesus and His church, we’re not signing up for regret. We’re saying yes to joy, fulfillment, and a life spent on what matters most—the mission of Christ.

Commitment builds momentum. One step at a time, with Jesus leading the way.
