How Downsizing Your Latte Could Become a Fragrant Offering To the Lord

How missionary giving is pleasing to God.

A few years ago, Nicole and I worked through a couples’ study on finance and stewardship. One of the things it stirred in us was giving to missionaries; something we’d never really thought of. We’d been faithful tithers to our local church for years, but when it came to supporting those out on the front lines of the Gospel, we’d let it slide.

One of the principles that really took root in our hearts was giving to missionaries. Throughout our marriage, we’ve remained faithful in our giving to our local church body, but comparatively, had not paid as much attention to our mission’s giving, both locally and abroad.

Throughout this study, all of a sudden we began to feel burdened for those working to further the Gospel, who did not have the benefit of a consistent paycheck.

Giving to Missionaries Was Pleasing to God

In the Book of Philippians, we can read an ancient reply letter from a missionary (Paul) who had recently received funds for his work in the mission field.

Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need.” (Phil. 4:14-16)

Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account. I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” (4:17-19)

Paul speaks quite clearly with the Philippian church about the support they had sent to him. For those of us who are not living in want, we should read Paul’s words and be reminded of all those across the world who are serving, yet who need our resources.

What Giving to Missionaries Could Look Like Today

Would it not be amazing if all missionaries were able to report back as Paul did, stating?

I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied…” (18a)

How can we make this happen? If we join together, it doesn’t take that much. It can start today, as you stop into your local coffee shop. Before you order that, ’20-Ounce, Triple-Shot, Sugar-Free Vanilla, Soy-Latte‘, take a moment to remember your brothers and sisters in Christ.

Instead, order a 16-ounce, or maybe even a 12, then cut a few other corners of spending with the intention to give the money you saved in the month to someone sharing the Gospel abroad. Remember those who are selflessly accepting a call to serve, without a definite financial future. Upon remembrance, take the opportunity to give to that brother or sister, which in turn might just be,

“…a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.” (18b)
