How to Write a Mission and Vision That Sticks

Short and Simple Wins

When a business, church, or organization sets out to craft a mission and vision, it often turns into a never-ending journey of “and then…”

  • We do this… and then…
  • We value that… and then…
  • We serve these people… and then…

You get the picture.

Eventually, someone wordsmiths it further, adding transitional phrases and connecting thoughts. Before long, the “mission” reads more like a governing policy than a memorable statement. It’s too long, too complicated, and too forgettable.

The Power of a Clear Mission and Vision

Some organizations just get it. They craft short, concise statements that hit the heart of what they do. They’re not trying to say everything. They just say the most important thing.

And guess what? It works.

You hear it once, and it sticks. Soon, every employee, member, or donor can repeat it. That’s the sign of a statement that’s doing its job.

A Mission Statement in Scripture

In Colossians 1, we find something that sounds a lot like a mission statement from Paul. There’s depth and detail in the chapter, but verse 28 rises to the surface:

“Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.” (Colossians 1:28, ESV)

It’s action-oriented (the what) and purpose-driven (the why). That’s the kind of focus we need in our mission and vision statements.

Write Your Own Mission and Vision

You may not be in a position to write or rewrite your company or church’s mission. But have you considered writing your personal mission and vision?

Start with Colossians 1. Read through the chapter. Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight what stands out. Then write a single sentence that captures:

  • Who you are
  • What you care about
  • Where you’re going

Don’t try to say everything. Say the most important thing.

You might be surprised at how that simple statement brings clarity to your day-to-day life—and maybe even your career.
