Look Up When Life Feels Heavy
Have you ever felt so weighed down by life that looking up feels impossible? When the weight of work or stress or perhaps sorrow starts piling up on you. It’s tempting to put your head down and just push through on your own.
Hannah’s story found in 1 Samuel 1 shows us a better way. When life pulls you down, look up to God.
Look Up to God With a Raw and Honest Prayer
Hannah was deeply distressed. She couldn’t have a child, and people mocked her for it. Instead of turning away from God, she turned straight to him. She poured out her heart, praying:
“O LORD of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me…then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life” (1 Samuel 1:11, ESV).
Her prayer was raw and honest. So desperate that the priest Eli thought she’d had too much wine (1 Samuel 1:13-14). Hannah responded with the truth of the situation:
“I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD” (1 Samuel 1:15, ESV).
Peace Can Come Before the Answer Does
Here’s the twist: Suddenly, Hannah found peace before anything in her circumstances had changed. Scripture says, “her face was no longer sad” (1 Samuel 1:18, ESV). She still didn’t have a child. She still carried the same ache. But she’d handed it to God, and that was enough to lift her head.
I’ve experienced this before in my own life. The anxiety and burden might not go away. Yet, through prayer and handing it over to God, something inside of me shifts. I have to acknowledge that I don’t have to carry it alone.
Look Up to God and See His Faithfulness
In time, God answered Hannah’s prayer. She gave birth to Samuel and kept her word, dedicating him to the Lord (1 Samuel 1:20). Her story reminds us that God hears our prayers and answers in his own timing, not ours.
But the real gift wasn’t just getting what she asked for. It was Hannah’s heart lining up with God’s will along the way. When we look up to God in our pain, we find his faithfulness. Not always in the way we expected, but always in the way we actually need.
