Strengthen Your Spirit with Spiritual Disciplines

Discipline doesn’t come easy for most people. And certainly not for me. Whether it’s physical, mental, or the day-to-day work, staying disciplined takes intentional effort and a lot of repetition. Our spiritual life works the same way. If we want to grow closer to God and build real resilience against temptation, we need spiritual disciplines woven into our daily rhythm. Every day, not just a Sunday practice.

Spiritual disciplines help us face spiritual battles. Otherwise, we walk into them unprepared. Strengthening ourselves spiritually is one of the most powerful ways to stand firm when trials come.

James reminds us, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12, ESV).

The Power of Spiritual Disciplines

Spiritual disciplines are simply practices that help us grow in faith and deepen our relationship with God. They’re tangible tools that become a defensive arsenal to resist temptation, strengthen our discernment, and walk in wisdom. Here are five foundational disciplines that have shaped my own walk and can transform yours too.

1. Prayer Is a Lifeline to God

Prayer is how we talk to God, express what we need, and ask for His help.

In Philippians 4:6, Paul writes, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (ESV).

A consistent prayer life strengthens our spirit and helps us turn to God when temptation shows up. Whether you set aside time in the morning, during a break, or before bed, prayer keeps you connected to Him.

You can also try using a prayer journal or an app. Sometimes, just sit in silence. Other times, pour your heart out to God.

2. Bible Reading Reveals God’s Truth

Engaging with Scripture is vital for knowing God’s will and resisting temptation. The Bible gives us the truth we need to counter the lies of the world.

Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (ESV).

Regular Bible reading equips us to stand firm against temptation. Whether you use a physical Bible or a Bible app, make time each day to sit in God’s Word. Let it shape your thoughts and guide your actions.

3. Worship Refocuses Us on Christ

Worship is an expression of our love and reverence for God. It can happen in quiet personal moments or in a room full of people singing together. Worship reminds us of God’s greatness and pulls our focus away from worldly distractions.

In John 4:24, Jesus tells us, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth” (ESV).

Make worship a regular part of your life. Whether you prefer quiet moments alone or gathering with others on Sunday, worship centers your heart on God. In turn, it can strengthen your resolve to resist temptation.

4. Community Gives Us Accountability

None of us are meant to walk this journey alone. Being part of a Christian community gives us the encouragement and accountability we need to stay strong.

Hebrews 10:24-25 urges us to “consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together…but encouraging one another” (ESV).

Join a small group or find an accountability partner who will pray for you, encourage you, and help you grow in faith. Together, we can support one another in times of temptation and celebrate the wins along the way.

5. Evangelism Means Sharing the Gospel

Sharing your faith strengthens not only others but your own spiritual walk too.

Jesus gave us the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them…teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (ESV).

Evangelism keeps us focused on what’s eternal. When we share the gospel, we remind ourselves of God’s truth and His commitment to us. Be bold in your faith, and look for chances to share God’s love with the people around you.

Make Spiritual Disciplines Part of Your Day
