It was a chilly Sunday morning in February 2009. Our pastor was wrapping up his sermon. As he moved into his conclusion, he explained that we would be having a couple of scheduled baptisms to wrap up our service. Then he gave an open invitation to anyone else who would like to be baptized; they should come forward during the next song.
For anyone who works with students, we make it our job to visit schools, strip malls and skate parks; trying to connect with unchurched youth. The passion is pure, with a deep desire for those students to know and follow Jesus. Yet, the youth church (not the youth group) we create couldn’t be more uncomfortable for these students.
As I scrolled through the latest posts, I was introduced to the incredible talent of a 10-year-old, blind, autistic boy named Christopher Duffley. This remarkable boy was adopted into a Christian home early on, but then God took over!
“Worship” is a verb that can be defined as “to render religious reverence and homage to.” Another definition is “to feel an adoring reverence or regard for (any person or thing).” As a Christian, what qualifies as worship?
There’s a deeper calling. Our music leaders are being led by the Spirit. They aren’t simply picking song that fit. They’re being led to bring songs that will carry the mind of the congregation toward the Biblical principle of that particular gathering.
“It was like she was hanging on every word! She was smiling and nodding her head as the intern explained all the tests and trials that Joseph faced.” This woman could relate. After so much pain and loneliness, this young woman finally had validation for her suffering. “God’s plan is so perfect!”
Goal-setting is so important! When I was a youth pastor, taking trips was a key part of the ministry. Before we left, we would have an evening of spiritual preparation; a group session to discuss the spiritual goals for the experience. Goal setting can be a great addition to any conference or mission experience, to increase the impact of the trip.
