WHAT CHILD IS THIS?

Who was this Child born on that very first Christmas Eve?

Why was He so important, that we’d still be talking about Him 2000 years later? Is He still important to us? To humanity? To the world?

To answer the question, What Child Is This?, I’d like to start by talking about the Naughty & Nice List. (I’m going to assume that everyone knows what that is.)

I know, I know; the Naughty & Nice List has nothing to do with Jesus.

Just bear with me.

I don’t know about your family, but in our family we’re not always nice. In fact, there’s a lot of days where it seems to be fairly heavy on the naughty side. Actually, sometimes there’s whole weeks of naughtiness!

Every member of our family (including the dad, believe it or not) behaves naughty sometimes. We lose our temper, act greedy, don’t always tell the truth…and that is the truth!

And yet, every Christmas morning, there are presents under the tree! Every Christmas morning the stockings are filled!

Why is that? How can that happen? How can we behave poorly, do and say naughty things all year long; but still get gifts?

It’s because of GRACE!

Grace is the gift behind every gift we receive.

Even though we haven’t earned, and definitely don’t deserve it. Boys and girls, moms and dads, all behaving poorly and acting naughty numerous times throughout the year. We still receive gifts at Christmas, because someone has shown us grace. Someone has been gracious to us.

Where did this gift of grace come from? When did it start?

We find the answer in the Bible!

There was a Follower of Jesus named Paul, who explains where this gift of grace started.

“For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”

Romans 3:22-24

Everyone has “sinned” which means everyone has done wrong things, or naughty things. No one’s perfect, and no one can reach God’s perfect standard.

Over 2000 years ago, on that first Christmas Eve, God showed us grace. His Gift of grace was Jesus. That’s why Jesus came, as the first Christmas Gift; a gift that was given with grace, even though we didn’t deserve it, and didn’t earn it.

So, what Child is this? Who is Jesus? And why is He so important to Christmas? Why should we be asking this question?

This Child is our Gift!

Jesus is God’s gift of grace. Through Him, all the sin, all the wrong and all the naughty behaviour is forgiven. We can have access to a perfect God, even though we’re not perfect at all, through Jesus.

You can accept God’s gift of grace, through Jesus right now. If you’d like to do that, you can pray in your own words, accepting God’s gift, receiving Jesus, and beginning a new life of grace.
